Genesis 34 - 36

What stood out today: v34:5 Dinah had been defiled. v25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, Dinah’s brothers killed every male. v30 You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizites. v35:1 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God… v5 and the terror of God fell upon the towns all around them so that no one pursued them. v10 Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob, your name will be Israel. v36 This is the account of Esau. v2 He took wives from the women of Canaan. v22 Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah.

My response: God, you are bigger than all these events, all these people. You are bigger than evil. Hmmm…that seems profound to me…Almost as if evil is so small as to be inconsequential. Rapes, deceit, mass killing, looting, incest. Hmmm…Suddenly I feel small before you, God. Small but dearly loved, precious. God, Jesus, I love how you led Jacob back to Bethel. I love how you remind him who he is and Who You Are. And you cause a “terror of the Lord” to fall on people all around. Lord Jesus, would you do this for me? Name me, reveal yourself, cause a terror to fall all around. Let there be great revival. Yes, Holy Spirit, would you move? Would the breath of God come? Let there be life.
